SONOMA COUNTY OVERVIEW

Sometimes referred to as “The Valley of the Moon,” the dale framed by the Sonoma and Mayacamas mountain ranges is the birthplace of Northern California’s wine industry. Although there is some question as to the direct translation of the Native American word “Sonoma” to “Valley of the Moon,” one thing that cannot be misinterpreted is the valley’s majestic landscape and its place as one of the most prestigious wine-producing regions in the world.
Famed American author Jack London settled in the area in the early 1900s, and eventually amassed a luxury estate that encompassed 1,400 acres and came to be known simply as “Beauty Ranch.” Of his beloved home, he wrote, “I ride over my beautiful ranch…The air is wine. The grapes on a score of rolling hills are red with autumn flame. The afternoon sun smolders in the drowsy sky. I have everything to make me glad I am alive.”
Indeed, the Sonoma Valley and the surrounding county contain enough wonderment
to fill anyone with a vigorous spirit. Sonoma County luxury homes of today
preside over the same panorama enjoyed at Beauty Ranch. In addition to its
location only 30 minutes north of San Francisco and more than 250 wineries,
Sonoma County also boasts 21 golf courses, 76 miles of coastline, and an array
of cultural activities.
